Latest on the Lassie (and us)

?T minus 2 weeks or so. Woke this morning, did a head count in the bed. Only 2... good good, so not yet. Breath a sigh of relief. We have moved from Rachadapisek, right into the centre of Bangkok, into the Sukhumvit area. We have a cool double apartment now, as the Irish grandparents are arriving in a week. In the interim, Aoife has her own hotel room. That just shows what good parents we are. Her own hotel room before she is 18 (and that is months). A rude awakening will be realised for her when she is back in with us, and with her wee brother too.

Aoife is loving the new place. Queen Sirikit park is only two Soi's (side streets) away. Aoife is having quite a bit of training time put in now with chasing pigeons, squirels and other kids. Of course her Dad is getting in a bit too, trying to catch her before she does manage to get into on of the ponds. There are no parks like this at home in Phnom Penh, so the freedom for her is fantastic. ?

Language skills are coming along now also with Aoife. Being away from the nanny and maid in the house, her first language is quickly becoming English. Her vocab is definately getting errrm 'bigger'. OK I admit that I could not come up with a better word. My personal favourite is, the way that she always said "Kaka" when she filled her nappy, has thankfully been replaced with the very much improved 'Shite'. Mother is not 100% impressed (to say the least), but even she can see that it is definately not quite so bad.

How do you make a decision like giving someone a name, that they will be stuck with for the rest of their life (or until old enough to change it legally). When I shared a flat in Dublin, there was a stray cat that we used to feed to keep away the rats, television license people and the likes. We called that cat 'chicken'. Yet, they are still letting me name a child (well the missus and I). Is this fair to the child, one has to ask.

We had a short list. George W Bush maybe, ohh what about Stalin, no no no, ok so Adolf? Hopefully I shall be relieved of duty for this one. Can anyone suggest a name at all? I could be slightly out of my depth here. There is the added concern that we will have to name him quite quickly once he is born, as we have to get the passports sorted before we can take him back to Phnom Penh. I do of course realise that we really have to see him first, before we can put a name to him, so we need many different suggestions. Brian O'Driscol Kelly, definately has a nice ring to it, especially after the game on 24th February!! Mind you it could be a tad confusing when I am in the British Embassey getting him a British passport.

From 16th Feb, we are in Bangkok and have been using the Thai mobile number. We can receive text messages on it and should you require to know about the birth when it happens, let us know YOUR mobile number and we can text you. We are going to be on broadband in Bangkok too, so we can Skype, email etc. etc. All that info is on the Contact page.
